Emperor Wu Zhao: A Burning Light
This poem’s muse is Wu Zhao, the first and only female emperor in China. Known widely for her rebellion against tradition and misogyny despite backlash, she poses a reminder to always fight back.
about Emperor Wu Zhao
with blood, spirit
and a cold blooded hand
She stands
as her political acumen washes over dynasties
in a sea of male archaisms and patrilineal spaces
where tradition is the only mode of existing
and fragile paradigms open gashes across the skin of history
She crafts complete rejection
her reign does not smell like an oxymoron
it only reeks of strength and a system newly collapsed
bound failingly by criticism
She screams louder than anyone else
collecting dust and divinity
as she snaps the spine of Chinese history
and rises to the sky
